Discrete Mathematics 1 and 2 - Spring 2008

Course Summary

Instructor: Nasir Memon, Office Hours: Tuesday 3:30 - 4:30 and Wednesday 3:00 - 4:00 pm, LC 116

Lecture: Monday 4pm-4:55pm and Wednesday 5pm-5:50pm, JAB 474

Recitation: Monday 2pm-3pm or 4pm-5pm, JAB 674

Textbook: Discrete Mathematics and Its Applications, Keneth H. Rosen. Please note that we will be using the 6th edition and recommend you do the same. However, if you would like to use the 5th edition, which is signficantly cheaper, then it is your responsbility to match the chapter and section numbers mentioned in class, and the problem numbers in the suggested problem list, to the appropriate ones in the 5th edition. To make your task easier, scanned versions of the problem lists in the 6th edition will be made available to you weekly for each section that we cover that week.

Grading:

You will have a weekly quiz at the beginning of class, every Wednesday from 4pm to 4:30pm. Sharp. Please arrive in class on time. There wil be a total of six quizzes.
The lowest quiz score will not be counted in your average. Best 5 will be taken. Each quiz carries equal weight.
Every Wednesday you will be assigned a set of exerices as homework. During the recitation on Monday you will be asked to do a subset of this problems as a group exercise. Your output will be graded and will count toward your Recitation Group Exercise Score.
We will also have a comprehensive final examination.
Final grades will be based on your quiz scores, recitation group exercises, and the final examination.
Your final grade will be calcuated as 0.60 * Max (Quiz Total, Final Exam) + 0.30 * Min (Quiz Total, Final Exam) + 0.10 * Recitation Group Exercise Score
