Workshop on Interdisciplinary Studies in Security and Privacy, September 26, 2008

It has long been recognized that technology alone cannot provide the information security and privacy needed in today’s interconnected world. Building systems and infrastructure that truly provide security and privacy relies on the interaction of technology with human psychology, business and economics, public policy, regulatory requirements, ethics, and legal jurisprudence and other disciplines.

It is imperative that experts in security technology and experts representing these diverse disciplines work together to build revolutionary approaches to security and privacy. To foster inter- disciplinary cooperation, Workshop on Interdisciplinary Studies in Information Security and Privacy (WISSP) will bring together experts in security technologies and non-technical areas to identify new research and educational directions in security and privacy where interplay among the various disciplines is required and will have the maximum impact.

The goal of WISSP is to define an agenda for both research and education in security and privacy that will transcend the study of specific disciplines, to explore how different disciplines can come together to improve security and privacy. How can and should legal, behavioral, policy and economic considerations together influence the design of secure systems? Conversely, how should the capabilities and limitations of security technology impact the legal, policy, and business environment? Most important, how can these disciplines work together to enhance security and privacy?

From the education perspective, how do we educate a new generation of information security professionals who fully utilize expertise in these diverse disciplines? How do we educate engineers and scientists in other disciplines on the importance of security, and how to utilize basic security principles from both technology and the other areas cited above?
